The Boerewors Sandwich: A Sensational Sandwich Recipe

The Heart of South Africa in a sandwich: The Boerewors Sandwich

When it comes to food, few things bring people together like a delicious sandwich. It’s a handheld delight, a portable feast that transcends borders and unites cultures. Today, we’re about to take a culinary journey to South Africa, the rainbow nation known for its diverse and vibrant flavours. Our destination? The Boerewors sandwich, a taste sensation that captures the essence of South African cuisine.

Boerewors: The Star of the Show

The Boerewors sausage is the undisputed star of this sandwich. This South African sausage, with its rich history dating back to the 17th century, is a testament to the country’s cultural melting pot. It’s a blend of beef, pork, and spices, encased in a spiral coil of sausage perfection. To prepare the patty, simply remove the sausage casing and form the meat into patties, creating a hearty and flavourful base for our sandwich.

Bacon: Crispy and Irresistible

Next up is the streaky bacon, that crispy, smoky goodness that adds an extra layer of indulgence to our sandwich. Fry it up to a golden crisp, and you’ve got a tantalising texture contrast to complement the juicy Boerewors patty. The sizzle and aroma of bacon are hard to resist, and it takes this sandwich to another level of satisfaction.

Onions: Caramelised Elegance

Caramelised onions, gently cooked in balsamic vinegar, bring a touch of sweetness and depth to our creation. The process of caramelisation transforms the humble onion into a rich, flavourful topping that balances the savoury notes of the Boerewors and bacon. Slowly sautéing the onions with balsamic vinegar enhances their natural sweetness, creating a sweet and tangy symphony that pairs perfectly with our other ingredients.

Chilli Avocado: Creamy with a Kick

Our sandwich wouldn’t be complete without a creamy, spicy twist, and that’s where the smashed chilli avocado comes in. Avocado, with its velvety texture and mild flavour, provides a cooling contrast to the smoky bacon and hearty Boerewors. The addition of chilli adds a kick that wakes up your taste buds and keeps each bite exciting.

The Assembly: Bringing it All Together

Now that we’ve covered our key ingredients, let’s talk assembly. The Boerewors patty, cooked to juicy perfection, forms the base of our sandwich. It’s a meaty foundation that sets the stage for all the other elements. On top of this, lay the crispy streaky bacon, ensuring that every bite has a delightful crunch.

Spread a generous portion of the chilli avocado on the other half of your bun. This creamy, spicy spread not only adds a burst of flavour but also serves as a glue to hold everything together. Then, carefully place your caramelised onions on the bacon. Their sweet, tangy goodness creates a bridge between the earthy Boerewors and the zesty avocado.

Instructions

  1. Start by preparing the Boerewors patties. Remove the casings from the sausages, add the breadcrumbs ensuring to mix fully into the meat.Shape the meat into two round patties and press flat underneath a saucepan. Season both sides with salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Preheat a grill or a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the Boerewors patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they are cooked through and have a nicely charred exterior. After flipping the first time add cheese on top of the patty. Remove them from the heat and set them aside.
  3. In the same skillet, cook the streaky bacon until it becomes crispy. Or if you have an air fryer, cook the bacon in there for 10-15 mins or until crispy. Remove the bacon from the skillet and place it on paper towels to drain excess grease.
  4. While the bacon is cooking, prepare the caramelised onions. In a separate pan, heat some oil over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook them, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and start to turn golden brown. This should take about 10 minutes.
  5. Once the onions have caramelised, add the balsamic vinegar to the pan. Continue to cook the onions for another 2-3 minutes, or until the vinegar has reduced and coated the onions with a sweet, tangy glaze. Remove the caramelised onions from the heat.
  6. Now, let’s make the chilli avocado spread. Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, and scoop the flesh into a bowl. Mash it with a fork until you achieve a creamy consistency. Now add the chilli flakes, season with salt and pepper and mix.
  7. To assemble the sandwiches, spread the chilli avocado mixture on the bottom half of each slice.
  8. Place a Boerewors patty on top of the avocado spread, followed by two slices of crispy bacon.
  9. Spoon a generous portion of the caramelised onions over the bacon, then add the second patty on top. Top with the other slice of bread.
  10. Serve your South African Boerewors sandwich immediately while it’s still warm. Enjoy this explosion of flavours and textures that pay homage to the diverse culinary heritage of South Africa!
