Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich Recipe: A Sensational Twist on a Classic

Take a classic Philly cheesesteak and make it sensational with grilled peppers, streaky bacon, and a smoky cheese sauce.

Few sandwiches rival the popularity of the Philly cheesesteak. It’s a classic American staple that brings together tender steak, melted cheese, and caramelised onions in a soft roll. But what if you could take it to the next level? That’s exactly what I’ve done with my Philly Cheesesteak recipe. It’s my take on the original, with bold additions like grilled peppers, streaky bacon, and a rich, smoky cheese sauce made from scratch.

Crafting unique, sensational versions of classic sandwiches is a passion of mine. This Philly cheesesteak-inspired recipe captures the heart of the original while offering a new flavour profile that’s indulgent and satisfying. Whether you’re a cheesesteak purist or someone who loves trying new things, this recipe promises to deliver.

Why You’ll Love This Philly Cheesesteak Recipe

1. It Features a Smoky, Homemade Cheese Sauce

Unlike the classic melted provolone or Cheez Whiz, my cheese sauce is made with American cheese slices, English cheddar, milk, and spices like smoked paprika and cayenne pepper. It’s creamy, flavourful, and adds an elevated touch to every bite.

2. Packed with Extra Layers of Flavour

Caramelised onions, grilled red and yellow peppers, and crispy streaky bacon bring sweetness, smokiness, and texture that complement the steak perfectly.

3. A Fresh Take on a Classic Sandwich

This isn’t just another Philly cheesesteak—it’s my Philly cheesesteak. My version respects the original while adding my signature twist, much like I’ve done with other sandwich classics.

What Makes This Recipe Special?

This Philly cheesesteak-inspired sandwich is part of my larger mission to reinvent classic sandwiches. From a heart attack burger to Italian subs, I love creating recipes that pay homage to tradition while pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in a sandwich.

What’s the secret to my take on the Philly cheesesteak? Partially freezing the ribeye steak before slicing. It’s a trick that ensures perfectly thin slices, just like in an authentic cheesesteak. Paired with smoky bacon, tender peppers, and a rich cheese sauce, every bite is packed with flavour.

Tips for Making the Perfect Philly Cheesesteak

    1. Thinly Slice the Ribeye Steak
Freezing the steak for 20–30 minutes makes it easier to slice thinly, which is key for tenderness and even cooking.

    1. Grill the Vegetables First
Grill your onions and peppers before cooking the steak to bring out their natural sweetness without overcooking the meat.

    1. Use a Hoagie Roll
Soft yet sturdy hoagie rolls are traditional for a Philly cheesesteak and will hold up against the juicy steak and melted cheese.

    1. Make the Cheese Sauce From Scratch
While store-bought options work in a pinch, a homemade sauce ties the flavours together. My version, with its smoky spices and creamy texture, is a game-changer.

FAQs About Philly Cheesesteaks

What makes a Philly cheesesteak unique?

The combination of thinly sliced steak, melted cheese, and caramelised onions served in a hoagie roll defines a Philly cheesesteak. My version keeps these essentials while adding a personal twist.

Can I use a different cut of beef?

Ribeye is the classic choice for its tenderness and flavour, but sirloin or flank steak can work if sliced thinly.

What cheese is best for a Philly cheesesteak?

Traditional options include provolone or Cheez Whiz. My smoky cheese sauce offers a rich, creamy alternative that pairs beautifully with the steak and peppers.

Instructions

Prepare the Cheese Sauce:

    • Place the milk in a small saucepan over medium-low heat and warm until steaming. Do not let it boil.

    • Add the American cheese slices and grated cheddar gradually, stirring constantly until fully melted and smooth.

    • Stir in cayenne pepper, smoked paprika, and season with salt and pepper. Keep warm on low heat, stirring occasionally.

Cook the Sandwich Fillings:

    • Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat with 1 tbsp vegetable oil or butter.

    • Add the sliced peppers and onion. Cook until softened and slightly caramelised, about 8 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside.

    • In the same pan, cook the streaky bacon until crispy. Drain on a paper towel and set aside.

    • Increase the heat to medium-high. Add the thinly sliced ribeye steak to the pan, seasoning lightly with salt and pepper. Cook for 2–3 minutes, stirring frequently, until browned but tender.

Assemble the Sandwich:

    • Slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise and lightly toast them.

    • Spread a generous amount of the cheese sauce on both sides of the bread.

    • Layer the steak, grilled peppers, onions, and streaky bacon onto the rolls.
